Punk Marketer, Mark Simmons Fires a First Shot to Launch the Marketing Revolution
Co-Host Brad Forsythe interviews Mark Simmons, co-author ofPunk Marketing: Get Off Your Ass And Join The Revolution. This Brit, who has taken the US by storm—not once but twice—in a long and tawdry eighteen years of marketing, brings a mix of healthy cynicism and common sense to the party, Simmons has a reputation as a savvy marketer and creator of non-stop powerful promotion who pushes the boundaries with phenomenal success. He shakes things up in the corporate world and has been at the topmost edge of new techniques running his own Anti-Corp and more recently at groundbreaking agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky (CP+B). After 9 years at two of London’s top ad agencies Mark was approached to move to the US to carry out global advertising responsibilities at one of the biggest international marketers, none other than Coca-Cola, whose brand has been consistently chocked up as one the most valuable—and best-recognized—on the planet. Mark returned to the UK to start Anti-Corp, an ad agency dedicated to turning tradition on its head using heretofore unknown marketing techniques to out think rather than outspend the clients’competitors. A mere six months after launching, Anti-Corp was described in a four-page feature in the Financial Times as being “at the vanguard of an advertising revolution.” In 2002 he headed back to the States to run the West Coast office of Crispin Porter & Bogusky, generally regarded as one of the top agencies in the U.S. and one the most highly awarded on the planet in recent years. Recently he has turned his talents to the non-profit sector working on communication campaigns for clients including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is on staff with Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection.
